NOTICE OF CODE CHANGES

EFFECTIVE MARCH 12, 2024 THE FOLLOWING CODES ARE TAKING EFFECT:

PLUMBING CODE - 2021 MICHIGAN PLUMBING CODE
MECHANICAL CODE - 2021 MICHIGAN MECHANICAL CODE
ELECTRICAL CODE - 2023 NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE (NFPA 70)

THE RULE SETS ARE AVAILABLE ON THE STATE WEB SITE WWW.MI.GOV/BCC UNDER THE ADMINISTRATIVE RULES, CODES, PUBLIC ACTS & STANDARDS SECTION.

ALL ELECTRICAL, MECHANICAL AND PLUMBING PERMITS ISSUED ON OR AFTER MARCH 12 WILL USE THESE CODES.

Department Duties

  • Enforces the building code, including all permit issuance, plan reviews, and inspections.
  • Coordinates construction inspection with the State of Michigan, Bureau of Construction Codes.
  • Enforces the property maintenance code to ensure that City properties are maintained to a minimum standard.
  • Administers the Municipal Zoning Ordinance including zoning compliance permits, certificates of occupancy, and site plan reviews. Consults citizens on prospective plans or projects.
  • Performs code enforcement on violations of City Ordinances.
  • Serves as Soil Erosion Officer for work performed within the City limits.
  • Enforcement of Rental Registration Ordinance.
  • Enforcement of Rental Inspection Ordinance.
  • Responsible for the City’s planning function and assists the Planning Commission in all areas of planning and zoning.              
  • Principal staff of the Zoning Board of Appeals.
  • Coordinates preparation of the City’s Capital Improvement Program.
  • Coordinates the development and maintenance of the City’s Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Ordinances.
  • Prepares grant applications and administers grant projects for the City.
  • Serves as staff liaison for the City's Historic District Study Committee, the Historic District Commission, and the Wildlife Sanctuary Board.
  • Works with various committees regarding community development including historic preservation, beautification, the wildlife sanctuary, etc.
  • Assists local economic development agencies in attracting and retaining industries and businesses.
  • Responds to public inquiries regarding any of the above activities.
