Adopt-A-Street

Adopt-A-Street

The mission of the Adopt-A-Street program is to provide a way for concerned citizens and businesses to actively participate in enhancing Alpena's appearance and cleanliness. This is one of many ways the City of Alpena joins with the community to make this a City of the highest quality.

Alpena's Adopt-A-Street program is similar in concept to the Adopt-A-Highway program operated by Michigan Department of Transportation. Joining the Adopt-A-Street program is easy and fun! Any group that has the enthusiasm and dedication to make our community a better place to live should participate. It enables interested community and service organizations, individuals, businesses, churches, clubs and boards, schools, or neighborhood groups to adopt a section of a City street.

Upon written request to the Engineering Department, the City will consider each application and review the proposed route. Following approval, each group will sign an Adopt-A-Street Agreement where they will be required to participate in two clean ups per year, one in the spring and one in the fall. Volunteers are encouraged to monitor conditions on their adopted section of street and report problems to City staff members for follow up.

In return for their efforts, the volunteers are recognized with signage located along their designated street sections.

The City will provide trash bags and loan safety vests to the participating groups and collect the filled bags when the volunteers have completed the litter pickup all at no charge. For more information contact Steve Shultz,  City Engineer, at 989.354.1730, or by email at steves@alpena.mi.us.

In the spring of 2013, a group from the Thunder Bay Island Preservation Society cleaned up the garbage along Prentiss Street and the marina breakwall walkway as part of the City's Adopt-A-Street program. The Thunder Bay Island Preservation Society is the first organization of 2013 to clean up refuse.
