Frequently Asked Questions
When are taxes due?
Summer taxes are payable July 1 through July 31 without penalty or interest. Taxes paid August 1 through February 28 are subject to penalties and interest charges.

Winter taxes are payable December 1 through February 14 without penalty. Taxes paid February 15 through February 28 are subject to a penalty charge.

Can I pay my taxes early?
The City of Alpena cannot accept payment for summer taxes prior to July 1 and December 1 for winter taxes.

Can I get a copy of my tax bill?
Yes. However, there is a copy charge. Please contact the Clerk's office for further details.

If I mail my tax payment, do I get a receipt?
Your canceled check will serve as your receipt. If you require a stamped, paid receipt, you must send your tax statement and a self-addressed stamped envelope with your payment.

When are penalties and interest applied?
Summer - Penalties (3%) are applied on August 1, Interest (1/2%) is applied on the 1st of every month.

Winter - Penalties (3%) are applied February 15.

Can I make a partial payment?
Yes, but it must be for the full amount of the entity you are paying. For example, if you choose to pay the college portion of your tax bill, but not the City portion, you must pay the entire college portion that is due. Please note that your tax bill must be paid in full before March 1, or they are turned over to the county as delinquent.

Note:   We do not accept postmarks; payment must reach us by the due date.
