Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary 2014 River Rats - What a wonderful year!

On a wet and rainy day, June 18th, 36 River Rat children met at the Besser Museum to learn hands-on about mammals. The museum was the perfect setting since we could not meet at Duck/Island Park due to weather conditions. Children were treated to guest speaker, Jan VanHousen, from Rogers City who is caretaker to a red fox, skunk, and lynx! Volunteers performed a puppet show with Herbert Hare, Wilma Weasel, and Rocky Raccoon and learned about teeth and skulls and why some animals are plant eaters, some meat eaters, and some both! The take home craft was painting plaster animal tracks. Children learned that front feet and hind feet can look very different from one another.

We thank our 12 wonderful and faithful volunteers from Science Olympiad, Thunder Bay Watershed Council, Adventureland Sports, Audubon, and the Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary Board for helping make this rainy day a success. We also thank Besser Museum for giving us a dry and welcoming venue for the River Rats!
