Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary River Rats - What a wonderful year!
Thank you to the many volunteers, parents, and caregivers who helped make the 2011 Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary River Rats summer science program a success! Over 102 children ages 5-10 and 50 adults participated in four, hands-on 2-hour sessions held throughout the summer at Duck and Island Parks. Participating Michiganders hailed from Alpena, Mason, Eaton Rapids, Okemos, Sanford, Charlevoix, and Traverse City. We also had visitors from Florida, New York, Georgia, Ohio and Texas!!

This years topics included: Frogs and Logs, and Pollywogs, Animal Tracks and...Other Things they Leave Behind, Water WOW, and Birds of a Feather Flock Together.

The program is presented by the City of Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary Board to promote environmental awareness and stewardship. The program chairpersons are Melissa Doubek and Alice Holcomb, both members of the Wildlife Sanctuary Board.

In addition to the Wildlife Sanctuary Board members we benefited from the efforts of 36 volunteers including representatives from:
