The Alpena Fire Department is an all-hazard emergency service. Twenty-four career firefighter/paramedics stand ready to respond to a wide array of situations. These include fire suppression, hazardous materials, specialized rescue including confined space, high-angle, cold water and ice rescue, and advanced life support emergency medical service. Through it Fire Prevention Division, the department provides fire inspection, code enforcement, and public education services to help prevent emergencies in the community.

Alpena firefighter/paramedics provide the highest level of medical care available outside of a hospital. Through a contract with Alpena County, Alpena City Fire provides paramedic ambulance response for not only the City of Alpena, but also the townships of Alpena, Green, Long Rapids, Maple Ridge, Ossineke, Sanborn, Wellington, and Wilson.

For almost 30 years, Alpena Firefighters have also provided non-emergency ambulance services to transport residents home from the hospital or to meet routine medical needs. A specially equipped Mobile Intensive Care Unit will be added to the Alpena Fire Department fleet in early 2011.

The Fire Chief is the departments lead administrator, and oversees all aspects of the fire department's operation. Forbush has over 30 years of experience in emergency services and is active in regional, state, and national professional groups.
